After our day of sight seeing we decided to have a drink and try and find one of those restaurants recommended to us. We walked down a side road from our apartment to go to a wine bar we had seen the day before, however it was closed so we headed on and went into a little cafe called Barnum. The Barnum cafe was totally unexpected as it was kind of like a cool Sydney cafe / bar, it was a bit Newtown, with mismatched furniture and bearded hipsters completing the picture. We had a few drinks before heading off to dinner, but definitely one to come back to.
We did eventually find one of the recommended locations for dinner, although almost by chance as the osteria had the smallest sign in Rome. But luckily we went in and sat down. We were treated to a windfall if simple meal, squished in amongst the other diners in this 5 table eatery. The place was called 'Alfredo e Ada' and had been operating since 1946! The menu was verbal, the old guy (presumably Alfredo) telling us what the meat and past dishes of the day were. The food was delicious, with Mick continuing his Lasagna challenge followed by the most tender veal and potatoes he had ever eaten, while Damian had Amatriciana followed by beef scallopini which was wrapped around a carrot and a bean smothered in a spicy tomato sauce accompanied by chilli spinach. Sounds weird but it was awesome, and we were happy as Rome had redeemed herself in the cucina of Italy.
